Project Billable Types: Hourly, Flat Fee, and Contingency
Choose how each project turns tracked time into an invoice
Applies to: Billing
Each project bills in one of three ways. You choose it on the project's Billing tab under Project Billable Type, and it changes how the invoice is worked out.
The Project Billable Type dropdown: Hourly, Flat Fee, and Contingency.
Picking a Type
Type
How it bills
Use it when
Hourly
Hours × billing rate
The client pays for the time you spend. This is the default and the most common.
Flat Fee
A fixed price, however many hours it takes
You quoted a set price up front.
Contingency
Depends on the outcome
You're paid on results rather than effort.
Note: Choose the type when you create the project. Changing it after time is logged changes how existing entries price on future invoices.
Keep Tracking Time on Fixed and Contingency Work
Even when hours don't set the invoice amount, keep logging them. Your hours show whether the fee you quoted covered the work. Compare them in the Profitability report. See Which Report Should I Use?.
Billable Type vs. the Bill Checkbox
These are separate. The billable type sets how the whole project bills. The Bill checkbox on each timesheet row sets whether that one entry is charged. The project's Time Entry Billable Status Default, also on the Billing tab, sets whether that checkbox starts ticked.
