Running a Conflict Check

Search your client and matter records for conflicts before you take on new work

Applies to: LawBillity

Before you take on a new client or matter, make sure it doesn't conflict with work for an existing client. The Conflict Checker searches your clients and matters for matching names and gives you a record of the check.

Running a Check

  1. Open Conflict Checker from the left menu or the Tools menu.
  2. Enter the names to check: the prospective client, the opposing party, and any related parties. You can check several names.
  3. Click Run Check.
  4. Review the results (see below).
  5. Save or print the results for your new-matter intake file.

Result
What to do
Exact Match
The name matches directly. The responsible attorney needs to review it before the firm goes ahead.
Partial Match
A similar name or related party. Look into it: it may be a coincidence or a real conflict.
No Match
Nothing found in the data in Time Tracker.

Best Practices

  • Check before you engage the client, not after.
  • Search every related party, not just the client: opposing parties, subsidiaries, and key people.
  • Keep client records up to date with accurate names. The check is only as good as your data.

Common Problems

  • No match, but you know there’s a history. The check only searches what's in Time Tracker. Try other spellings, abbreviations, and former names.
  • Your firm says Matter instead of Project. That's a term setting. See Renaming Clients, Projects, and Other Terms.
