Understanding Non-Project Related Entries
Log time to a client without picking a project, or require a project for every entry
Applies to: Workforce · Premium · LawBillity
Not every hour fits a project. When a client allows it, you'll see Non-Project Related in the project dropdown on your timesheet. Pick it for time that belongs to the client but not to one project.
When to Use It
- General client work: calls, account management, or oversight that covers several projects or none.
- Internal time: admin, training, or company meetings. Many firms set up an Internal or Overhead client for this.
- Before a project starts: scoping, proposals, or discovery before the project is set up.
Turning It On or Off for a Client
- Open the client and go to the Other Details tab.
- Set Non-Project Related to Enabled or Disabled.
- Tick Override Firm Non-Project Related Entries so this client's setting is used instead of the firm's.
- Click Save.
When it's disabled, people have to choose a project for every entry to that client. That's useful when every hour must map to a project, like a consulting client billed by statement of work.
The Firm-Wide Setting
The default for all clients is Non-Project Related Entries (Enabled or Disabled) in Admin > Settings > Timer Settings. The same page has a box to rename the term, so your firm may see a different name in the dropdown.
How It Shows in Reports
Non-Project Related time appears in reports as its own line under the client. If you measure utilization or profit by project, remember this time counts for the client but not for any project.
Common Problems
- Non-Project Related isn’t in the dropdown. The client, or the whole firm, requires a project. Pick the right project, or ask your admin to allow it. Your firm may also have renamed it.
- People log everything as Non-Project Related. Disable it for that client so they have to pick a project.
- A project you need isn’t listed. See Why Can't I See Certain Clients, Projects, or Activities?.
