Configuring the Client Portal

Let a client log in to see and pay their invoices

Applies to: Premium · LawBillity

The client portal gives your clients their own login to see and pay their invoices, so they don't have to email you for copies or updates. Each client sees only their own information.

What Clients Can Do

  • View and download their invoices.
  • Pay online, if you've connected Stripe, LawPay, or CPACharge. See Setting Up Online Payments (Stripe, LawPay, CPACharge).
  • See entries that haven't been invoiced yet, entries on draft invoices, and notes, if you allow it (see below).
  • See project progress and budgets.

Giving a Contact Access

  1. Open the client from the Clients list and go to the Billing Contact tab.
  2. Tick Grant this contact access to the Customer Portal.
  3. Click Save & Close. The contact is emailed a password.

Choosing What the Portal Shows

  1. Go to Admin > Client Portal. Your client list is shown.
  2. Choose Yes or No for showing Uninvoiced Entries, Pre-Billed Entries, and Note Entries in the portal.
  3. Choose who gets portal emails: the main and billing contacts, the main contact only, the billing contact only, or all contacts with portal access.
  4. Click Save.
Note: Your firm may call it the Customer Portal. It's the same thing. See Renaming Clients, Projects, and Other Terms.

Common Problems

  • The client didn’t get the email. Check the email address on the Billing Contact tab, check who gets portal emails in Admin > Client Portal, and ask them to look in their spam folder.
  • The client can’t pay online. Connect a payment service first. See Setting Up Online Payments (Stripe, LawPay, CPACharge).
  • The client sees more or less than you expected. Check the Yes/No choices in Admin > Client Portal.
  • A new invoice isn’t in the portal. Finalize it first. See Finalizing and Sending an Invoice. Entries on draft invoices show only if Pre-Billed Entries is set to Yes.
