How to Create a New Project

Set up a project under a client so your team can log time and expenses to it

Applies to: Workforce · Premium · LawBillity

A project is a piece of work for a client, such as Website Redesign for Acme Corporation. Create one when you want to track time, expenses, and budget for that work separately from the client's other work.

Creating a Project

  1. Click +Create at the top and choose Project. The Add New Project form opens.
  2. Choose the Client. Every project belongs to a client.
  3. Enter a Project Name your team will recognize in a dropdown.
  4. Leave Project Status on Open. Change it to On Hold or Completed later as the work moves along. (Admins can edit the list of statuses in Custom Lists.)
  5. Fill in any of the optional settings below, then save the project.

The project shows up right away in timesheets, expense forms, and reports, so your team can start logging time to it.

Optional Settings

If...
Do this
Your firm uses its own project numbers
Set Custom Project IDs to Enabled in Admin > Settings > System Settings, then enter a Project ID. When it's Disabled, IDs are created for you.
You want to group projects by kind of work (Consulting, Audit)
Pick a Project Type. Admins manage the list in Admin > Settings > Customize > Custom Lists > Project Type.
You bill a fixed price, or on outcome, instead of by the hour
Change the Billable Type to Flat Fee or Contingency. See Project Billable Types: Hourly, Flat Fee, and Contingency.
You want to track hours or dollars against a budget
Only certain people should log time to it
Limit access on the project's Users tab. This needs Project Level Access Permissions turned on. See Managing Project Access and Team Members.
Note: Your firm may say Matter instead of Project, or Customer instead of Client. The steps are the same. See Renaming Clients, Projects, and Other Terms.
